Anal Fistula

What is anal fistula?

Anal fistula – also called fistula in ano – is an abnormal tunnel under the skin that connects the anal canal in the colon to the skin of the buttocks. It is usually caused by an infection near the anus, which results in a collection of pus (abscess) in the nearby tissue. Usually, anal fistulas form as a result of untreated anal abscesses.

What is the treatment of anal fistula?

The treatment of anal fistula is always surgical. The basic principles of anal fistula treatment are the following:

  • Detect and destroy the internal opening.
  • Locate the tract of the fistula and excise it completely along its entire length.
  • Make sure that the incision of the sphincters is as small as possible.

The endoscopic ablation of anal fistulas with the application of therapeutic LASER is a modern, minimally invasive procedure that is not accompanied by incisions and open wounds, minimizing the suffering of patients who were subjected to classical rehabilitation techniques.

The technique initially involves mapping of the affected area (finding the external and internal opening of the fistulous duct). In chronic, complex conditions, a micro-camera is inserted to check the interior of the fistulous ducts and map them, having an image on a screen (VAAFT Technique).

Then, after the fistulas have been cleared of inflamed tissues and exudates, the laser optical fiber is inserted through the external fistula opening.

The optical fiber emits a Laser beam absolutely controlled, without causing damage to adjacent tissues. The radiation applied to the inner surface of the fistula duct induces a photothermal process (photocoagulation), which ablates the walls of the fistula and results in sterilization of the area and ultimately closure of the fistula with rapid healing and a short definitive recovery.
