Liposuction

What is liposuction?

Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty (or body contouring), is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of excess fat from specific areas of the body. The procedure is typically used to contour the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks and other areas where diet and exercise alone have not been successful. On a global scale, it remains to be among the most popular and requested surgical cosmetic procedures that can help people achieve a slimmer and more proportional body shape.

Liposuction is not a slimming method. However, there is a misconception that people suffering from obesity can get rid of it through liposuction. On the contrary, liposuction “corrects” the lines and the shape of the body and it may work for someone who has a lot of body fat in specific places but otherwise have a stable body weight.

In which areas is liposuction applied?

Good candidates for liposuction are healthy men and women who, despite good diet and exercise habits, are bothered by areas of unwanted fat that don’t budge. However, the areas in which fat accumulation is observed from birth differ. In women, the localized fat is mainly found in the thighs and/or abdomen area, while in men is mainly found in the abdomen and chest area (gynecomastia). However, apart from the aforementioned areas, there are many other parts of the body that benefit from it, such as:

  • Double chin area (double-sawn area)
  • Arms (Forearms)
  • Buttocks (Buns)
  • Hips
  • Knees
  • Calves
  • Sides (Love Handles)
  • Even the ankle area

Liposuction: Method and advantages

Liposuction can be applied with various procedures beyond the classic method, which is already evolving according to the advancement of technology. Some of other liposuction procedures are the bloodless liposuction technique, with laser, with radio frequencies and the three-dimensional (3D) or four-dimensional (4D) method. At the same time, it can be combined with special threads, with liposculpture, etc., in addition to being applied alone.

At the SurgiShape Clinic, we apply the Laser and Power – Assisted Smartlipo Liposuction procedure. It is a safe method that achieves the fat liquefaction (laser lipolysis) and therefore its best removal. As it is less traumatic than the classic method, it offers faster recovery, minimal pain, with no marks or scars. The recovery time is very short and therefore the patient can immediately return to his/her daily activities and work. In addition, as the tools that are used are smaller in diameter, they leave no marks and scars to indicate that the area has been operated on.

Liposuction: Results

The results of liposuction are usually visible already after the procedure. However, it should be noted that the appearance of the area to which it was applied improves continuously for several weeks after the operation, as the swelling subsides.

It is should be noted that the result of liposuction is permanent. Because, as, Dr. Galanakis explains, with laser liposuction is achieved the degradation of fat stores.

What happens after liposuction?

After the operation, a pressure bandage is applied to the operation area through a compression garment worn by the operated person. This lasts for 1 month. Post-operatively, it is possible to observe any of the following or a combination of them:

  • Bruising that lasts up to two weeks
  • Swelling that lasts from two weeks until two months
  • Numbness that lasts several weeks
  • Possible drainage in the treatment area, depending on the surgical technique (this concerns only the classic liposuction method).

The patient returns immediately to his/her daily life but it should be good to avoid the intense physical activity for about 1 month.
