Adrenal Surgery

The adrenal glands are endocrine glands that are yellowish in color and are located on top of each kidney. They are responsible for the production of very important hormones (such as cortisol, aldosterone and adrenaline) for the proper function of the human body.

Common adrenal disorders

Many times an adrenal gland tumor is discovered by accident (incidentally) in an imaging test that was done for another reason (e.g. in an abdominal ultrasound). This tumor, because it is “incidentally found”, is called adrenal incidentaloma. If the adrenal tumor is inactive, i.e. it does not produce an increased amount of hormones and if it is smaller than 3 cm, it is simply monitored annually with ultrasound or MRI. If it is active – i.e. it produces an increased amount of hormones – or it is over than 3 cm or growing in successive tests, then it is removed.

The patient shows symptoms of increased secretion of adrenal hormones and an adrenal gland tumor is found on imaging test. In this case, it is required the removal of the adrenal gland as well as the adrenal tumor.

Surgical adrenalectomy

The surgical removal of the adrenal glands (surgical adrenalectomy) is difficult due to their anatomical location, which is very deep within the peritoneal cavity and close to large vessels. For this reason, the laparoscopic adrenalectomy has a significant advantage over the conventional open adrenalectomy.

With laparoscopic adrenalectomy, even the most difficult anatomical points of the abdomen can be approached safely and comfortably. Furthermore, due to the magnification of the image from the laparoscopic camera, the surgical procedures are performed more safely for the patient (near the large vessels of the abdomen). In conclusion, the use of laparoscopic adrenalectomy allows the performance of minimally invasive surgery with the advantages of more rapid recovery and a shorter hospital stay than open adrenalectomy.
