GYNECOMASTIA

WHAT IS
GYNECOMASTIA

Gynecomastia refers to the excessive development of breast tissue in men, which can cause a “feminine” appearance of the chest. It can also be due to significant deposition of fatty tissue in the mammary gland, a condition that is treated with liposuction if it’s fat or with surgical reduction of the mammary gland if it’s excessive growth of the gland itself. This condition can appear at any age and is often associated with hormonal imbalances, such as increased estrogen levels or decreased testosterone levels. Gynecomastia can also be caused by other factors, such as medication use, obesity, or genetic conditions.

Symptoms of Gynecomastia

The most common symptoms include:

Enlargement of the breasts with or without pain or tenderness

Aesthetic dissatisfaction or discomfort when wearing tight clothes or when the chest is exposed

Psychological stress due to feelings of social awkwardness

AREA OF IMPLEMENTATIONS

RHINOPLASTY

LIPOSUCTION

OTOPLASTY

HYALURONIC ACID

FACE THREADS

BOTULINUM TOXIN

IDEAL CANDIDATE

Ideal candidates for gynecomastia surgery are men over 18 years old whose condition cannot be corrected through alternative medical treatments.

They exhibit significant enlargement of the mammary gland, either due to hypertrophy of the gland or due to fat deposition in the area. Candidates should have a stable body weight, good overall health, not smoke, and possess good skin elasticity.

There is no specific age limit for men who wish to undergo surgery for gynecomastia. Even teenagers can benefit from the treatment, although secondary procedures may be required in the future if breast growth persists.

Consultation

The Surgery

Recovery

During our meeting for gynecomastia surgery, we will:

Discuss your surgical goals

Record your medical history, including medications, vitamins, and any previous surgeries

Evaluate your general health condition

Perform diagnostic tests to determine the underlying cause of gynecomastia

Take photographs for your medical file

Discuss appropriate anesthesia options

Review potential risks and complications

Gynecomastia treatment surgery is performed under general anesthesia and typically lasts 1 to 2 hours. Patients can usually return home on the same day as the procedure. Only in special cases, and always in consultation with you, may you be required to stay in the hospital for the first night after surgery.

During the recovery period following gynecomastia surgery:

Dressings will be applied to your incisions

An elastic bandage or support garment may be used to minimize swelling and support your new chest contour as it heals

You will receive specific instructions, which may include:

How to care for the surgical site

Medications to take to aid healing and reduce infection risk

It’s crucial that surgical incisions are not subjected to excessive force, swelling, abrasion, or motion during the healing process

Remember, following these instructions is essential for the success of your surgery.

FAQs

What is Gynecomastia and when does it start?

Gynecomastia is a condition where male breasts enlarge due to glandular tissue hypertrophy or increased fatty tissue. It can occur in children, adolescents, and adult men, primarily caused by an imbalance of hormones and testosterone.

What are the types of Gynecomastia?

There are two types of Gynecomastia: Glandular and Pseudo-Gynecomastia. Glandular type is characterized by an increase in glandular tissue and can affect one or both breasts, sometimes unevenly. Pseudo-Gynecomastia is caused by an increase in fatty tissue in the breasts, not by glandular tissue hypertrophy. It’s usually associated with weight gain and obesity.

What are the causes?

Hormonal changes throughout life, such as during puberty or advanced age, can cause Gynecomastia. Certain diseases like liver or kidney failure, hypothyroidism, and Klinefelter syndrome, as well as some medications like steroids and antidepressants, can contribute to its development.

Is the treatment permanent?

Surgical treatment of Gynecomastia can offer permanent results, but this depends on various factors, including the causes of Gynecomastia and subsequent lifestyle changes.

How long is the hospital stay?

Patients can usually return home on the same day of the procedure. Only in special cases, and always in consultation with the doctor, may a patient need to stay in the hospital for the first night after surgery.

When can I return to my daily routine?

Recovery after gynecomastia surgery is usually quick, with most patients returning to work within 2-5 days. Sports activities can be resumed after a few weeks, always following the doctor’s instructions and individual recovery progress.

What is the cost of the procedure?

The cost of gynecomastia surgery can vary significantly, and the final price will depend on a range of factors. An initial consultation will help you understand the specific cost for your case and explore the best treatment options.
