LIPOSUCTION

WHAT IS
LIPOSUCTION

Liposuction involves the removal of subcutaneous fatty tissue while simultaneously enhancing body contours. On a global scale, it is the most popular and sought-after surgical procedure.

Liposuction is not a weight loss method. However, there is a misconception that individuals struggling with obesity can get rid of it through liposuction. On the contrary, liposuction “corrects” the lines and shape of the body.

AREAS OF APPLICATION

DOUBLE CHIN AREA

ARMS

ANKLE AREA

BUTTOCKS

HIPS

KNEES

CALVES

IDEAL CANDIDATE

Ideal candidates for liposuction are men and women over 18 years old who have elastic skin, good muscle tissue, are healthy, and are close to their ideal weight. Age is usually not a deterrent factor for liposuction; however, skin may become looser as you age, which can affect optimal results.

Also, women planning a pregnancy should put the procedure on hold. Additionally, it’s important to note that liposuction never substitutes diet and exercise and is not a quick fix to address weight problems or significantly change body mass index.

RECOVERY

During the liposuction session, we will discuss your surgical goals and record your medical history. Additionally, we will assess your general health condition, take photographs for your medical file, and discuss any potential risks or complications.

A liposuction procedure can last from half an hour to three hours, depending on the method and the extent of the problem. Your hospital stay after liposuction depends on the extent of the procedure and your individual recovery.

Liposuction is usually performed under local or general anesthesia, so a hospital stay may not be necessary.

After your liposuction surgery is complete, bandages will be applied to the incisions. You will need to wear an elastic bandage, support bra, or compression garment to minimize swelling and support your body as it heals. You will also be given specific instructions on how to care for your body after surgery, medications to take to aid healing, and reduce the chance of infection.

Additionally, during the recovery period of the first week, pain, swelling, and bruising should be monitored. By the second and third weeks, you will begin to feel much better and will be able to gradually return to work. In the 4th and 5th weeks, swelling and bruising will gradually begin to subside, while from the 6th week onwards you will see a continuous improvement in the swelling and you will be able to gradually return to your sports activities. Do not forget that it is important that the surgical incisions are not subjected to friction or movement during healing.

FAQs

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure aimed at removing stubborn fat deposits from specific areas of the body, such as the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, arms, and neck. This procedure helps improve both the shape and contour of the body.

Can abdominoplasty and liposuction be done simultaneously?

Abdominoplasty and liposuction can be performed simultaneously. This combined surgical procedure is often desirable because it can offer more comprehensive results and reduce overall recovery time compared to having them done separately. However, this will depend on each patient’s medical history and always in consultation with the specialized surgeon and their surgical team.

Does liposuction work and how long do the results last?

Liposuction offers a quick, safe, and effective solution for permanently eliminating stubborn fat deposits that resist diet and exercise. Unlike weight loss, which shrinks fat cells, liposuction eliminates them completely. This means that even if you gain weight in the future, the areas that have undergone the procedure will maintain their shape.

How much does liposuction cost?

The cost of liposuction can vary significantly, depending on the experience of the Specialized Surgeon or the hospital where the procedure will take place.

Are there complications in the liposuction procedure?

Liposuction is an absolutely safe procedure, without any complications.

How to choose the best liposuction surgeon?

Choosing an experienced and specialized surgeon is vital for the liposuction procedure. Before your final choice, it’s recommended to meet with the specialized surgeon and their surgical team who will provide you with in-depth information about the procedure, recovery, and potential risks.

How long will I need to stay in the hospital?

The hospital stay after liposuction depends on the extent of the procedure and the individual recovery of each patient. Usually, liposuction is done under local or general anesthesia, so a hospital stay may not be necessary. Often, patients can return home the same day or the next if the procedure is limited and there are no complications. However, if the procedure is extensive or if there are complications, the surgeon may recommend staying for one or more days to monitor the patient’s recovery.

Who is it for?

Ideal candidates for the liposuction technique are people with normal weight and elastic skin who have a small percentage of excess fat in certain areas. This doesn’t mean, of course, that it can’t be applied to anyone who wishes to improve their appearance, thereby increasing their self-confidence.

Can I repeat liposuction whenever needed?

An area is fully treated in the first procedure, and this is often final in most cases. Subsequent liposuctions are increasingly difficult, dangerous, and produce less and less benefit.

I want whole-body liposuction, can this be done?

To maintain the patient’s health, we do not perform liposuction on the entire body. This is because no more than 40% of the body area is treated in one session and no more than 10% of the body’s equivalent fat is removed.

Will my stomach be flat after liposuction?

This depends on many factors, mainly on how much fat you have deep behind the muscle layer, i.e., inside the abdominal cavity. This fat is not removed in liposuction; only the superficial fat above the muscles is removed.

How many kilos can I lose with liposuction?

It should be noted that liposuction is not a weight loss surgery. Any weight loss is incidental and is not the purpose of this procedure. Usually, we don’t exceed 4-6 liters of fat suction, which is equivalent to a weight loss of 4 kilos max.

Does liposuction loosen the skin?

This is not true. The opposite is true. Properly done liposuction will tighten the overlying skin. However, if liposuction is not done carefully, it can loosen the skin due to the surgeon removing too much fat from underneath.

When liposuction is done, does the fat go elsewhere?

This is the most common myth. Our body has a fixed number of fat cells since we were 5-6 years old. The number remains constant throughout your life. This means that as we grow and increase weight, these fat cells do not increase in number but can increase in volume. Similarly, when we lose weight at any time during our lives, our fat cells also remain constant in number but decrease in volume.

Can I choose the type of anesthesia for the liposuction I've decided to have?

When it comes to small areas, the type of anesthesia can be any. Even with local anesthesia, one can comfortably do the procedure. However, when many areas are added, one should turn, for safety reasons more, towards epidural or general anesthesia. There is always, of course, the possibility, if someone prefers local anesthesia, to do larger areas, but in stages.

I have cellulite. Will it be corrected with liposuction?

Liposuction is not a method of correcting cellulite. However, with some types of liposuction, especially superficial and laser lipolysis, many people have seen improvement in cellulite. Nevertheless, one cannot recommend liposuction as a method of combating cellulite.

What is laser lipolysis?

This is the technique where an optical fiber enters under the skin into the fatty tissue. This optical fiber is connected to a laser machine, which emits energy at a wavelength that melts the fat. This method has the advantage that the heat of the laser causes some degree of skin tightening, preventing possible loosening due to liposuction on the one hand, and that there is a better recovery time on the other.

How long after giving birth can I have liposuction?

This time is different depending on the particularities of each individual. If a woman is not breastfeeding, her weight is stabilized and she has no other particularities, three months are considered sufficient. Usually, however, it takes longer, because the body should have stabilized in terms of its shape, for which usually three months are not enough.

What is pulsed liposuction?

This is the method in which a very thin, pulsating cannula enters under the skin into the fatty tissue. This method has several advantages such as greater suction speed, more homogeneous fat removal, and various others. It is an evolution of classic liposuction with several advantages over it.

Can laser lipolysis be combined with pulsed liposuction?

Certainly. And not only are they combined, but one enhances the results of the other. The combination of the two methods is an ideal choice, further optimizing the final results.

Can liposuction on the abdomen affect a future pregnancy?

Liposuction on the abdomen does not affect future pregnancies. On the contrary, for individuals with significant fat accumulation in the abdomen, it’s recommended to have liposuction before a potential pregnancy to avoid excessive abdominal stretching and subsequent stretch mark formation.

How long does a liposuction procedure last?

A liposuction procedure can last from half an hour to three hours, depending on the method and the extent of the problem.

Is liposuction a safe procedure?

Liposuction is a very safe procedure when performed according to certain rules. These rules presuppose the selection of an appropriate Specialized Surgeon and suitable facility. There has never been a problem in the past when these two basic rules were properly followed.

What's the difference between liposuction and liposculpture?

In reality, liposculpture differs from liposuction in that the fat removed after liposuction is placed in another area for filling. That is, liposculpture is liposuction in some areas and fat implantation in others simultaneously, during the same procedure. Of course, in everyday use, liposculpture is used with different meanings that don’t correspond to the true meaning of the term.

Are there different liposuction techniques?

There are many techniques that are distinguished in terms of the infiltration fluid and the method of anesthesia, as well as in terms of the tools used. The latter category includes pulsed liposuction and laser lipolysis. This doesn’t mean that classic liposuction doesn’t bring very good results. However, the methods we mentioned earlier are a step forward, improving the final result and recovery time.

If I have liposuction in one area of my body, can I have liposuction again in the same area if I want or need it after some time?

If needed, liposuction can be repeated as many times as one wants in the same area of the body. Usually, however, there is no such need, because having liposuction once is enough to have a permanent correction of the problem.

I live abroad. If I come for vacation in Greece, how many days do I need to have liposuction as well?

Liposuction is a procedure that can be organized and done in a short time. In a typical liposuction procedure, one week is enough for it to be done and for the person to be able to travel afterwards. Depending on the extent of the problem, and possibly the use of advanced methods such as laser lipolysis, even less than a week may be enough. In these cases, the return to activities can be immediate. Thus, one can combine correcting their body’s disharmony while continuing even in summer (with a special method – SlimLipo) their vacation. Air travel is not contraindicated even immediately after the procedure.
