BREAST LIFT

WHAT IS A
BREAST LIFT?

A breast lift, or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure performed on women of all ages. It’s the most common operation among women seeking to improve the appearance of their breasts and eliminate excess fat.

The female breast is the most sensitive area of a woman’s body. Changes due to weight fluctuations, hormonal shifts, or pregnancy can significantly impact the breasts. The shape, position, and volume of the breasts can undergo alterations.

This is precisely the goal of a breast lift: to aesthetically and functionally transform the female breast. The procedure aims to reposition the nipple and breast tissue to a higher point, allowing for the removal of excess skin. A successful outcome, with the equal removal of excess skin, restores the breast to its original composition and firmness.

WHO IS IT FOR?

Women whose breasts have sagged and acquired a “droopy” shape

Women whose nipples point downward

Women whose breasts are not at the same level (one is lower than the other)

Women who are physically healthy and maintain a stable weight

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate for a breast lift is a woman who notices sagging or loss of youthful breast position, either due to natural aging, pregnancy and breastfeeding, or skin laxity.

If the nipples point downward or sit below the inframammary fold, and if the breasts lack firmness or are sagging, then a breast lift procedure may be the appropriate solution. The candidate should be in good health and have realistic expectations for the outcome, while smoking should be avoided.

THE DOCTOR
ADVISES

The breast lift procedure, also known as mastopexy, is a surgical solution designed to restore the appearance and firmness of your breasts. If your breasts have changed due to aging, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight loss, this surgery can help you feel comfortable and confident in your body once again.

A breast lift offers several significant benefits for women who feel their breasts have changed over time:

  • Boosted Confidence: Restoring the shape of your breasts can help you feel beautiful and comfortable in your body again, enhancing your self-esteem and sense of harmony.
  • Youthful Appearance: The breasts are repositioned to their original place and shape, creating a more proportionate and natural look.
  • Relief from Physical Discomfort: If sagging breasts have caused neck, back, or shoulder pain, a breast lift can alleviate these physical symptoms associated with the weight of the breasts.
  • Improved Comfort: With your breasts in the correct position, you’ll enjoy greater comfort wearing clothes and experience better mobility without restrictions.

THE SURGERY

RECOVERY

The breast lift consultation involves a detailed discussion about the patient’s desires and concerns, as well as a physical examination of the breasts. The doctor will review the patient’s medical history, and for patients over 40, a recent mammogram is required.
Available options will then be analyzed, considering whether the patient would like to combine the lift with augmentation, enabling informed decisions and the development of an appropriate treatment plan.

Breast lift surgery is a procedure tailored to the degree of breast sagging and the position of the nipple relative to the inframammary fold. The duration of the procedure typically ranges from 2 to 3 hours, depending on the complexity of the case, and is performed under general anesthesia, although local anesthesia with sedation may be used in cases of minor sagging.
During the procedure, the surgeon selects the appropriate incision technique (keyhole, anchor, or periareolar) to lift the breast and nipple, using a special closure technique at the end that leaves the finest and most discreet scars.
After the procedure is completed, the patient can return home.

Following a breast lift, the patient typically returns home wearing a special supportive bra, which should be worn for the first week to encourage healing.
Pain medication may be needed for 5-7 days, as it’s normal to experience bruising, swelling, and mild discomfort, which subside within about two weeks.
The patient can return to mild activities and work after 2 weeks but should avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for at least 6 weeks. Full functional recovery is usually achieved within a month.
Finally, the patient receives detailed post-operative instructions and schedules regular follow-up appointments to ensure smooth and rapid recovery.

FAQs

What is a breast lift?

A breast lift, also known as mastopexy, is a surgical procedure aimed at lifting and reshaping breasts that have sagged due to factors such as aging, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or significant weight loss. During the surgery, excess skin is removed and surrounding tissue is tightened, creating a firmer and more youthful breast appearance.

When are the results visible?

The results of a breast lift are immediately visible, with the breast shape continuing to improve after surgery. Over time, post-operative swelling subsides and incision marks gradually fade. The final result is typically assessed about 2 months after the breast lift procedure.

What is the recovery time?

Recovery after a breast lift primarily involves rest for the first 1-2 weeks, while strenuous activities and heavy lifting should be avoided for about 4-6 weeks. Pain medication and antibiotics may be prescribed to manage pain and prevent infections. Additionally, wearing special supportive bras is recommended to promote healing and maintain breast shape.

Is a hospital stay necessary?

Usually, the hospital stay is up to 24 hours.

What are the advantages of a breast lift?

A breast lift offers many benefits, such as improving breast appearance by giving them a more youthful and firm shape. This often results in increased self-confidence for women regarding their appearance. Additionally, the surgery can help clothes and swimwear fit better, and can restore symmetry between breasts if there’s a difference in size or shape.

Am I a candidate for a breast lift?

A woman may be a good candidate for a breast lift if she has sagging breasts that have lost shape and elasticity, is in good physical condition without serious medical issues, maintains a stable weight, and isn’t planning significant future weight loss.

Are there side effects or complications in breast lift surgery?

Although complications or side effects are rare, the most common include scarring, which is inevitable but fades over time, and changes in nipple and breast sensation, which are typically temporary.

What is the cost of a breast lift?

The cost of a breast lift varies depending on several factors. The exact cost is usually determined after a consultation with the surgeon.
